How Much Does Diving Cost? A Realistic Budget for Beginners

It's probably the first question on your mind: how much does all this actually cost? Diving has a reputation for being an expensive sport, and it's not entirely wrong. But it's not the financial black hole some people imagine either. Here's an honest breakdown of the costs, so you can plan without any nasty surprises.

How much does a diving certification cost?

The cost of an Open Water PADI course varies depending on the destination and instructor, but expect somewhere between 350 and 600 euros. This typically includes instruction, full equipment, open water dives and the certification itself. The PADI eLearning (the theory part you complete from home) is usually extra, around 180 euros, paid directly to PADI.

It's a one-time investment: your certification is valid for life and recognized worldwide. When you divide that by the number of dives you'll do afterwards, it's probably the best value-for-money you'll ever spend as a diver.

Should you rent or buy diving gear?

When you're starting out, renting is the smart move. No need to buy everything before your first dive. A full rental kit (wetsuit, BCD, regulator, mask, fins, tank) costs between 30 and 60 euros per dive depending on the destination.

Over time, if diving becomes a regular thing, certain purchases start making sense. The first piece of gear to buy? Your own mask. A mask that fits your face properly is pure comfort and safety. Budget 40 to 120 euros for a good one. Then come fins (60-150 euros), a dive computer (200-500 euros for an entry-level model), and eventually a wetsuit.

How much does a dive trip cost?

Diving often means travelling. From Brussels, a flight to Tenerife or Malaga costs between 50 and 200 euros return depending on the season. Accommodation on site starts at 40-80 euros per night for something decent. A 5-to-7-day dive trip, all-in (flights, hotel, dives), can come to 800-1500 euros depending on the destination and comfort level.

In Belgium, there are options too: Vodelee, La Gombe, Barrage de l'Eau d'Heure, or Nemo 33 in Brussels. No flights, no hotels, modest entry fees. Perfect for diving regularly without blowing the budget.

What are the hidden costs of scuba diving?

A few expenses people often forget: the medical certificate (sometimes required, 25-50 euros), dive insurance (DAN Europe offers plans starting at 50 euros per year), and tips for boat crew at certain destinations. These aren't huge amounts, but better to plan for them.

Another one: underwater photos and videos. Many dive centres offer this as an extra (10-30 euros). It's tempting, and honestly, the memories are worth every cent.

Bottom line: how much to get started?

For your first Open Water certification with a short trip, plan a total budget of roughly 1000 to 1500 euros (course + travel + accommodation). It's a real investment, but it's also the start of a passion that takes you to corners of the world you'd never have seen otherwise. And once certified, each subsequent dive costs far less: between 30 and 80 euros for a guided dive, equipment included.
