Gift a scuba diving experience: the perfect present
Looking for a gift that is not another candle, another bottle of wine or another voucher that ends up in a drawer? A scuba diving experience might be the most original, memorable and life-changing present you can give someone. Whether it is for a birthday, Christmas, Valentine's Day, an anniversary or simply because you know someone who has always been curious about the ocean, a discovery dive creates a memory that lasts a lifetime. Here is everything you need to know to get it right.
What exactly are you gifting?
The most common diving gift is a Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) experience. This is a supervised introductory dive for people with zero experience. No certification is needed, no swimming test, and the minimum age is just 8 years old. The recipient learns the basics in shallow water, then does a real dive to a maximum depth of 12 metres with a certified instructor at their side the entire time. The whole experience takes 2 to 3 hours.
All equipment is provided: wetsuit, mask, fins, BCD, regulator, tank and weights. The recipient only needs a swimsuit and a towel. For the full rundown of what a DSD involves, read our complete Discover Scuba Diving guide.
Beyond the DSD, you can also gift more extensive experiences. An Open Water course (3-4 days, 300-600 euros) is a gift that results in a worldwide diving certification valid for life. A dive package (a weekend of guided dives for someone already certified) is another excellent option. The choice depends on the recipient's situation and your budget.
How much does a diving gift cost?
Here is a realistic price range for the most common diving gifts:
- Discover Scuba Diving experience: 50 to 120 euros. This includes all equipment, a briefing, supervised shallow water practice and a dive in open water. At Dive With Lau, the experience also includes underwater photos when conditions allow.
- Pool-based discovery experience: 30 to 60 euros. This takes place in a pool (like Nemo 33 in Brussels) and is a good option if the recipient is nervous about the sea or if the gift is for a child under 10.
- Open Water course: 300 to 600 euros depending on destination. This is a significant gift that results in a PADI certification valid for life. Perfect for someone who has talked about wanting to dive for years.
- Guided dive package (2 dives): 80 to 160 euros. For someone who is already certified and wants to explore a new destination.

What occasions work best for a diving gift?
A diving experience works for virtually any occasion, but some moments are particularly fitting:
- Birthdays (especially milestone ones): turning 18, 30, 40 or 50? A first dive is an unforgettable way to celebrate. It is an experience, not a thing, and research consistently shows that experiences bring more lasting happiness than material gifts.
- Christmas: a diving voucher is easy to wrap and impossible to duplicate. The recipient can redeem it during a spring or summer holiday, giving them something to look forward to during the grey months.
- Valentine's Day or anniversaries: a couples' discovery dive is a fantastic shared experience. Diving together creates a unique bond that you will talk about for years.
- Graduation: an Open Water course is a meaningful gift for a young person finishing school or university. It opens a lifetime of adventures.
- Retirement: many retirees discover diving as a new passion. They have the time, the curiosity and often the budget. A DSD is the perfect introduction.
- "Just because": sometimes the best gifts have no occasion. If someone close to you has mentioned the ocean, marine life or underwater exploration, this is your sign.
How do you present a diving gift?
The presentation is part of the experience. Here are some ideas:
A printed gift voucher: at Dive With Lau, we can provide a personalised voucher with the recipient's name, the experience details and a beautiful underwater photo. You print it, put it in an envelope, and it is ready to wrap.
A creative reveal: put a pair of diving goggles or a snorkel mask in a gift box with a note saying "You are going underwater." Place a small card inside a fish bowl. Write the voucher code inside a seashell. The presentation does not need to be expensive; it just needs to match the person.
A surprise booking: if you know the recipient's schedule and travel plans, you can book the experience directly and reveal the dates. This works best if you are doing it together as a shared activity.
An e-voucher: perfect for last-minute gifts or when the recipient is far away. We send a digital voucher by email that they can redeem when they are ready.
What does the recipient need to know?
When you give a diving gift, include some practical information so the recipient knows what to expect:
- No experience required: a DSD is designed for complete beginners. No certification, no training, no preparation needed.
- Health considerations: the recipient will need to fill out a medical questionnaire before the dive. Conditions like uncontrolled asthma, heart problems, recent ear surgery or pregnancy may require medical clearance. If they have any of these, they should mention it when booking so it can be addressed in advance.
- What to bring: swimsuit, towel, sunscreen. Everything else is provided.
- Minimum age: 8 years old for a DSD. Children aged 8-9 are limited to shallow water (2m in pool, 12m in open water with instructor).
- Duration: allow 2 to 3 hours for the full experience.
- Booking: they can contact Dive With Lau directly to schedule at a time and destination that works for them. We operate in Tenerife, Malaga and Greece.
What if the recipient is scared of diving?
This is more common than you might think, and it is completely fine. Many people who receive a diving gift are excited but also nervous. Fear of deep water, fear of breathing underwater, fear of marine life: these are all normal reactions.
A good instructor makes all the difference. At Dive With Lau, we take our time with nervous first-timers. We explain everything in advance, practise in shallow water until the person is genuinely comfortable, and never rush anyone deeper than they want to go. If they decide not to dive on the day, that is OK too. We can reschedule or offer an alternative experience.

Can you gift a diving experience for children?
Yes. Children aged 8 and up can do a Discover Scuba Diving experience. For children aged 8-9, the experience takes place in a pool or very shallow confined water (maximum 2 metres). From age 10, children can do a full DSD in open water (maximum 12 metres) and can even begin the Junior Open Water Diver course.
A diving gift for a child is incredibly rewarding. It teaches them respect for the ocean, builds confidence, and often sparks a lifelong passion. For complete information on diving programmes for children, read our diving with kids guide.
How do you book a diving gift with Dive With Lau?
The process is simple. Contact Lau and let us know:
- What experience you want to gift (DSD, OW course, guided dives).
- The recipient's name and approximate age (for children, exact age matters for programme selection).
- Whether you want a physical voucher, e-voucher, or direct booking.
- Any preferred destination or dates.
We will send you a personalised voucher within 24 hours. Gift vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase, giving the recipient plenty of time to schedule their experience.
The bottom line
A diving experience is one of those rare gifts that can genuinely change someone's life. Many of the most passionate divers in the world started with a gift: a birthday discovery dive, a Christmas voucher, a spontaneous holiday decision made by someone who cared enough to say "I think you would love this." It is personal, it is memorable, and it is the kind of present people talk about for years.
Give the gift of breathing underwater. It is hard to top.
